In the report of the German independent research institute AV-Test “The best antivirus for Windows 10,” Windows Defender (Windows Defender) was one of four software products that received the highest ratings in terms of protection, performance, and usability. Of course, along with the winner, there were also no less worthy candidates for the title of the best antivirus. Let’s see what trends are set today to protect operating systems.
Why is Windows Defender recognized as the best antivirus?
Windows Defender shared the top honors with F-Secure SAFE, Kaspersky Internet Security, and Norton Security, but Microsoft software has a significant advantage over these three: it comes free with Windows 10, while the others are paid.
AV test results show that Windows Defender managed to block 100% of zero-day malware with 307 samples and 100% of common threats with 2428 samples. It has also been shown that software has an extremely low impact on operating system performance.
Several other free antivirus products have missed the perfect result. Popular AVG and Avast showed a score of 17.5 out of 18 points, and both lost half a point in the defense category. The most unreliable antivirus in the ranking was Webroot SecureAnywhere 9.0, the overall rating of which was only 11.5 points.
What products received the silver and bronze medals?
The top 3 best antiviruses include Avast, AVG and Trend Micro. Although the three leaders provide 100% protection against online threats (but with false detections), no one could detect absolutely all viruses offline – the maximum value that was achieved was 98.3% for ESET. Also in the top ten software solutions include such products as:
- McAfee Internet Security
- Norton (Symantec) Security
- AhnLab V3 Internet Security
- Bitdefender Internet Security
These solutions have also scored high and show excellent readiness to counter viral threats.
The independent testing laboratory AV-Comparatives has published a new report on anti-malware protection in the fall of 2019, which named the best antivirus of the year. Despite the high ratings, it turned out that none of the existing anti-virus programs provides 100% protection against threats – there are simply no perfect solutions, but they are all very close to it, experts at AV-Comparatives explain.
Unexpectedly for the researchers themselves, Microsoft Defender was recognized as one of the best antiviruses among all – an impressive conclusion, given the number of high-quality paid and free alternatives on the market, as well as the huge criticism that Microsoft’s antivirus solution has previously been subjected to.
Defender boasted a network protection level of 99.96%, which puts it in the TOP 10 antiviruses reviewed by AV-Comparatives. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that the overall results hardly differ from program to program. For example, Defender managed to successfully block 10 552 malware (out of 10 556), but even the antivirus with the lowest rating – Total Defense – and it blocked a solid 10 537 threats.
Windows Defender antivirus has come a long way since the release of Microsoft Security Essentials 10 years ago, after which Microsoft spent years to bring its product almost to the ideal. No wonder Apple has allowed porting Windows Defender to its macOS operating system.
